Overview

The IBM x3400 server has been revised over three different generations (M1-M3). M1-M2 share the same disk drives. The best way to determine which server you have is via the 4-digit IBM feature code on the front of your server. Normally new generations are based off of new Intel CPU generations, often changing sockets and Bus speeds, making memory and CPU modules between generations incompatible.
