Overview

The SUN StorageTek 6140 is a 4Gbps Fibre Channel SAN solution. The controller tray features (16) 3.5" drive slots for both high performance 10K / 15K FC disk drives operating at 2 or 4 Gbps or high capacity SATA drives for near-line storage.

The 6140 offers dual, redundant RAID controllers with either 2GB or 4GB of cache. 4GB models have (4) host ports per controller while 2GB models have (2) host ports per controller.

Capacity can be added to the 6140 controller via CSM200 (CSMII) expansion enclosures which also offer (16) drive slots. The expansion trays are identical to the controller tray except for the link control cards on the rear which replace the RAID controllers. 2GB cache controllers can support up to (64) disk drives (3 expansion enclosures) while 4GB cache models can address up to 112 drives via (6) expansion enclosures.

Note that enclosures have a 2Gb / 4Gb link rate switch on the front. All 10K RPM FC disk drives operate at 2Gbps and must be installed in enclosures that have link rate switch set to 2Gbps. All SUN qualified 15K FC and SATA disk drives for the 6140 controller can negotiate at 4Gbps and should be installed in enclosures with the link rate switch set to 4Gbps. 4Gbps capable drives can revert to 2Gbps FC operation, but this configuration is not recommended.
