Overview

The IBM x3500 has been revised over four different generations, M1-M4. Generations M1-M2 share the same disk drives. Generations M3-M4 share the same LFF SAS / SATA HotSwap and SFF SAS / SATA Hot-Swap disks. However, the M3 and M4 use different style Simple Swap disk drives.

New generations of the x3500 correlate to new Intel CPU architecture updates. In most cases, CPUs use different sockets between each generation of server so upgrades are limited.
